The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) was established in 1824 by the Medical Society of South Carolina as a private medical college. The medical school came under state ownership in 1913, and was designated a full university in 1969. The school has 1,300 faculty members and trains 2,600 medical professionals per year. It is well-known for programs in areas including cardiovascular medicine, cancer care, and neuroscience. Other programs include pharmacy, nursing, and dental training. The MUSC Medical Center in Charleston is made up of four hospital centers including a children's facility and a psychiatric institute, has some 700 beds, and operates the city's Level I trauma center.
