MarkWest Energy Partners marks its territory as an alpha dog in the US midstream markets. MarkWest Energy Partners has oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids pipelines, storage terminals, as well as gathering and processing pipelines and fractionation plants in the Appalachian Basin, Michigan, and the Southwest. It is targeting the US' lucrative shale plays as a growth segment. In this regard MarkWest Energy Partners operates a midstream natural gas joint venture (Liberty, formed in 2009) in the Marcellus Shale play in Appalachia, and a regulated pipeline serving Arkoma's Woodford Shale play. Boosting its holdings further, in 2011 it acquired the 49% of Liberty it bid not already own for a $1 billion.
