One of Japan's leading retailers, MYCAL runs more than 100 general merchandise and specialty stores in formats that include its mainstay Saty supermarkets (food, apparel, household items), Vivre fashion shops (apparel, accessories), and Mycal Town (complexes combining the Sakurano and Saty concepts with other services). Huge debts and competition from foreign-owned discount stores forced the company to shed locations and subsidiaries. In 2001 MYCAL filed for bankruptcy protection and was bought by Japanese retail giant AEON, operator of the Jusco supermarket chain, in late 2003. Five years later, rehabilitated, it opened its first new store. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competitive Landscape for MYCAL Corporation
Demographics, consumer tastes, and personal income drive demand. The profitability of individual companies can vary: while QSRs rely on efficient operations and high volume sales, FSRs rely on high-margin items and effective marketing. Large companies have advantages in purchasing, finance, and marketing. Small companies can offer superior food or service. The industry is highly labor-intensive: annual revenue per worker is between $40,000 and $45,000. Restaurants compete with companies that serve meals or prepared foods, including grocery stores, warehouse clubs, delis, and convenience stores. In addition, restaurants compete with home cooking. To read the full description, subscribe now.
