Lucite International has its roots firmly planted in plastics. The top producer of acrylic monomers (ahead of Rohm and Haas, Degussa, and Asahi Kasei) with quarter-share of the world market, Lucite International has a history that dates back to the discovery of methyl methacrylate (MMA) by an ICI chemist in 1934 and DuPont's opening of the first US plant three years later. MMA is the main building block of acrylic materials. The company's brand names include Lucite, Perspex, and Lucite Tufcoat. Charterhouse Capital, which had owned 78% of Lucite, first put it up for sale in 2006, meeting with no success. It finally managed to bring off a sale to Mitsubishi Rayon two years later. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competitive Landscape for Lucite International Group Limited
Demand depends on the level of manufacture of plastic products, which is closely linked to US industrial production. Because resin manufacture is a high-volume process, the profitability of individual companies depends on operating efficiencies. Large companies have significant economies of scale in production and in the purchase of raw materials. Smaller companies can compete effectively by producing specialty resins and fibers. Many smaller companies buy commodity resins from large producers and rework them into specialty compounds. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue is about $900,000 per worker. To read the full description, subscribe now.
