The Bayou State's largest health insurer, Louisiana Health Service and Indemnity, operates as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA), an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It provides health insurance products and related services to some 1.3 million members from its offices throughout the state. BCBSLA offers HMO, PPO, supplemental Medicare, and traditional indemnity plans, as well as the BlueSaver high-deductible plan with a health savings account. Its HMO Louisiana subsidiary offers a point-of-service (POS) plan that provides some out-of-network benefits. Customers include both individuals and employer groups. BCBSLA is a mutual insurance firm owned by its customers.
