The team was founded by Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin and has reached the Stanley Cup finals just once, losing to the Detroit Red Wings in 1998. Washington plays host at the Verizon Center, in which Lincoln Holdings owns a 45% stake. The group also owns the Washington Mystics WNBA and a 45% stake in the Wizards.
