Lihir Gold operated a gold mine on Papua New Guinea's Lihir Island, a volcanic island that contains one of the world's largest gold bodies. Lihir Gold produced more than 700,000 ounces of gold annually and has reserves of more than 25 million ounces. It developed the Ballarat gold mining project in Australia, which will began production in 2008. The company bought two Australian gold miners since 2007, greatly enhancing its gold production. Lihir Gold was aiming to produce close to 1 million ounces annually. In 2010 Lihir was acquired by Australia's Newcrest Mining for $8.8 billion.
