Company Description
Lihir Gold is stuck between volcanic rock and a hot spot, and it likes it that way. The company operates a gold mine on Papua New Guinea's Lihir Island, a volcanic island that contains one of the world's largest gold bodies. Lihir Gold produces more than 700,000 ounces of gold annually and has reserves of more than 25 million ounces. It is developing the Ballarat gold mining project in Australia, which will begin production in 2008. The company has bought two Australian gold miners since 2007, greatly enhancing its gold production. Lihir Gold is aiming to produce close to 1 million ounces annually. In 2010 Lihir agreed to be acquired by Australia's Newcrest Mining for $8.8 billion.
