Kumagai Gumi Co., like other Japanese builders, is trying to tunnel out of mounds of debt. The firm specializes in civil engineering projects such as roads, subways, tunnels, and dams. It also builds golf courses and industrial plants. Kumagai Gumi has been selling off stocks and real estate, cutting payroll, closing subsidiaries, and exiting operations in Europe and US to focus on Southeast Asia. The company has scrapped plans to merge with former rival Tobishima in 2005. To read the full description, subscribe now.
