Company Description
When it comes to copper, Kazakhmys does everything from dig it up to refine it. The company is one of the world's largest copper producers, with 17 mines, 10 concentrators, and two copper smelters. Its copper cathode production (used in electronics, autos, and other products) tops about 300,000 metric tons per year. Kazakhmys also processes by-products such as gold, silver, and zinc, and is Kazakhstan's largest power producer. It operates primarily in Kazakhstan, but exports much of its copper and all of its precious metal production to Europe. China is its largest customer, taking in some 60% of its copper production. Chairman Vladimir Kim has a 28% stake and the Kazak government holds 26% of the company.
