Kaiser Aluminum went on a diet, slimmed down considerably, and now operates just 10 fabricated products manufacturing plants in the US and Canada. Kaiser's main customers are in the aerospace, engineering, and transportation markets. The company manufactures more than 500 million pounds of fabricated aluminum products annually. Diversified metal services center Reliance Steel & Aluminum is the company's largest customer, representing almost 20% of sales. It had also participated in a joint venture called Anglesey Aluminum, which operated an aluminum smelting facility in the UK. (Kaiser got 49% of Anglesey's production.) That smelter, and thus the JV, was shuttered in 2009. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Kaiser Aluminum Corporation
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
