    The world's largest country (by population) is an important market for the world's largest chip maker (by sales). Intel employs 6,000 people in China, engaged in R&D, semiconductor assembly and testing, and marketing and sales. While spending more than $2.5 billion building its first Asian wafer fabrication facility in Dalian, Intel announced in early 2009 that it will close its Shanghai assembly and testing facility, forcing 2,000 workers to move or lose their jobs. The company remains committed to China, however, pledging $110 million more for the Dalian plant, which is expected to begin making chipsets in 2010.
