After some introspection, Octel changed its name to Innospec. The company rebranded to align its name more closely with its growing specialty chemicals businesses. Innospec's Fuel Specialties segment makes chemical additives that enhance fuel efficiency and engine performance, and its Active Chemicals unit makes several products used in the personal care, paper, detergent, and photographic markets. Its TEL (tetraethyl lead) product, an anti-knock gas additive sold to oil refineries worldwide, now generates less than 10% of the company's sales. Declining TEL sales after the US Clean Air Act was passed, along with similar moves by other countries, forced the company to develop other business lines.
