Normal doesn't quite describe it. Illinois State University (ISU) provides advanced education courses in more than 180 academic fields, including business, fine arts, education, and science, nursing, and technology. The school has a student body of more than 20,000 graduate and undergraduate students; about 95% are Illinois residents. ISU's facilities include a public planetarium, two primary laboratory schools, and the Milner Library with more than 1.5 million volumes. The university is governed by a board of trustees selected by the Illinois governor. ISU was founded to train teachers (as Illinois State Normal University) in 1857; it was the state's first public university.
