Russian warplane maker IRKUT wants to be known for more than its Sukhoi fighter jets. The company designs and builds combat and amphibian aircraft that have, for over 70 years, been delivered to more than 37 countries. While military aircraft account for about three-quarters of sales, IRKUT also makes unmanned aerial vehicles, combat navigation and targeting systems, aircraft components, and civil airplanes. The company has partnered with EADS for help in adapting operations to global industry standards. As part of the partnership, IRKUT and EADS are collaborating on a contract to make components for Airbus. IRKUT management owns more than half of the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competitive Landscape for IRKUT Corporation
Demand for commercial, military, and private airplanes drives the aircraft parts industry. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations and the ability to secure long-term contracts. Small companies can compete by specializing in high-end, low-volume, or hard-to-find parts, or in production of low-price commodity parts. Large companies have economies of scale in production and purchasing. The industry is labor-intensive: annual revenue per employee is about $200,000 at larger companies, $125,000 at smaller ones. To read the full description, subscribe now.
