The company makes and leases projection and sound systems for some 350 giant-screen IMAX theaters in more than 40 countries. The theaters (owned by commercial multiplex operators, museums, and science centers) are licensed to use the IMAX name; operators pay maintenance and royalty fees to IMAX. Formats include IMAX Dome and IMAX 3D; screens reach heights of up to 80 feet. IMAX also produces special-format films, such as Under the Sea 3D, which are shown on its projection systems.
