This link will open in a new window International Launch Services (ILS) is where East meets West in the space race. Although the company's majority owner, Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center , is based in Russia, ILS is registered in the US. ILS gets payloads into orbit using venerable Atlas and Proton launch vehicles as well as the new Angara family of vehicles from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (operated by the Russian Space Agency) in Kazakhstan. Since its creation in 1995 as a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and its current Russian owner, ILS has participated in more than 100 launches. UK-based Space Transport acquired Lockheed Martin's stake in 2006; Khrunichev State Research became the majority owner in 2008.
