Company Description

HOVENSA brings together US and Latin American know-how and operations to handle oil products in the US Virgin Islands. HOVENSA is a joint venture of Hess and Venezuelan oil giant PDVSA (its major crude oil supplier). Once the largest private employer in the US Virgin Islands, the company operated a 500,000-barrels-per-day crude oil refinery on St. Croix, along with two specialized oil processing complexes, a 150,000-barrels-per-day fluid catalytic cracking unit, and a 58,000-barrels-per-day delayed coker unit. However, the St. Croix refinery had run up losses for years, and was shut down in 2012.
