Heico Companies specializes in buying distressed companies and turning them around. The firm, which typically invests for the long haul, owns interests in about 40 companies, several of them Rust Belt-based manufacturing concerns that founder Michael Heisley acquired during the 1980s. Many were bankrupt when they were bought. Heico's holdings include Davis Wire, Canadian steelmaker Ivaco , and heavy industrial equipment maker Pettibone. Heico also has interests in companies in the plastics, food, and telecommunications industries.
