Hatteras Financial hopes for smooth sailing on the sometimes tumultuous seas of mortgage investing. The company is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that invests in adjustable-rate and hybrid adjustable-rate single-family residential mortgages guaranteed by a US government agency or a government-backed company such as Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac. Hatteras Financial's investment portfolio, valued at more than $5 billion, consists mostly of five-year hybrid adjustable-rate loans; the REIT prefers to invest in mortgage securities backed by Fannie Mae, which pays principal and interest sooner than Freddie Mac. Hatteras Financial is externally managed by Atlantic Capital Advisors.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Hatteras Financial Corp.
The health of the economy drives demand for REITs as investment vehicles. Profitability depends on the value of the properties in the portfolio, which in turn highly depends on real estate vacancy rates. Large companies have advantages in deal-making, and economies of scale in marketing, computer and infrastructure investment, and operations. Smaller companies can compete by specializing not only in real estate type, but by geography, though geographic focus can increase risks. To read the full description, subscribe now.
