The largely mall-based retailer specializes in caps featuring licensed logos of pro (MLB , NBA , NFL and NHL ) and college sports teams. The company operates some 860 stores under the name Hat World as well as half a dozen other banners in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. It opened its first store in 1995; six years later, Hat World bought bankrupt rival Lids and tripled in size. Stores and Web sites operate under both names and stock caps with regional team favorites. Hat World was acquired by footwear retailer Genesco in 2004 for $165 million; the company also signed a licensing agreement with industry big-head Mainland Headwear Holdings .
