The company caters to customers who sew by offering fabrics, crafts, sewing machines, and accessories through some 265 stores (down from nearly 450 in 2004) in more than 35 states. To compensate for the waning popularity of sewing clothes, the company has expanded its selection of home decorating products, including drapery and upholstery fabrics and home accent pieces. Slumping sales led Hancock Fabrics to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2007. It emerged from bankruptcy in mid-2008.
