Thanks to Habitat for Humanity, more than 1.5 million people worldwide know there's no place like home. The not-for-profit, ecumenical Christian organization has built more than 300,000 houses at cost for families who demonstrate a need and are willing to invest several hundred hours of "sweat equity" during construction. The new homeowners also make payments on no-interest mortgages, and Habitat funnels the money back into the construction of houses for others. The organization operates through more than 3,000 affiliates in more than 90 countries, including all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
