GreenMan Technologies grew tired of collecting old tires and is betting on alternative fuel systems and recycled materials as the primary sources of its future revenues. The company had collected and shredded the equivalent of about 13 million passenger tires a year for use in landfills, roads, and septic fields. In mid-2009 it sold this low-margin business, acquired American Power Group (APG), and announced plans to commercialize APG's proprietary dual-fuel energy technology. These external fuel systems allow for the easy conversion of diesel engines to dual-fuel use, such as diesel and compressed natural gas.
