This link will open in a new window Giant Food Stores (aka Giant-Carlisle) operates about 145 supermarkets under the Giant and Martin's Food Markets banners in Pennsylvania, and in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Not to be confused with its Landover, Maryland-based sister company Giant Food , both firms are units of Ahold USA , which operates some 700 supermarkets in the eastern US. Giant Food Stores was founded in 1923 and acquired by Amsterdam-based Royal Ahold in 1981. In 2003 its parent company integrated administrative and other functions at the chain with New York-based TOPS Markets .
