Genesee & Wyoming once relied on the salt of the earth -- hauling salt on a 14-mile railroad for one customer. Now the company owns stakes in more than 60 short-line and regional freight railroads that operate over a total of about 10,700 miles of track, including about 6,800 miles of track owned and leased by the company and another 3,100 miles belonging to other railroads. Outside the US and Canada, the company has operations in Australia and the Netherlands and a minority stake in a railroad in Bolivia. To read the full description, subscribe now.
