General Moly, reporting for molybdenum duty. The mineral development, exploration, and mining company (formerly Idaho General Mines) finds and exploits molybdenum oxide (moly), a mineral used primarily as an alloy in steel production. Steel makers create moly-enhanced pipes valued by the construction, aircraft manufacturing, and desalinization industries for their strength and resistance to heat and corrosion. Refiners use the pipes and employ the mineral to remove sulfur from diesel fuel and crude oil. General Moly owns two properties in Nevada, one in an 80/20 joint venture with Korean steel company POSCO and one outright. It plans to have both mines producing nearly 50 million pounds annually by 2010. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for General Moly, Inc.
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
