Company Description
Between a rock and a hard place is a good place for Furukawa. Founded in 1875 to mine and smelt copper, Furukawa is a major manufacturer of construction and industrial machinery (cranes, drills, rock crushers) and a leading miner and smelter (copper, gold, silver). Furukawa also makes electronic materials, including high-purity gallium arsenate used in cell phones (replacing silicon as the material of choice by manufacturers), and chemicals that include cuprous oxide (used in paint for ships) and sulfuric acid (primarily sold to titanium dioxide manufacturers). Other operations include fuels (gasoline, diesel, kerosene), real estate, and trucking services. Most of Furukawa's sales come from Japan.
