The company manufactures franking (discount postage metering) machines, about 40,000 a year, and inserting devices used in mailroom operations. Other products include mail collection and sorting services, processing software, consumables, and scales. With subsidiaries in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US, FP commands a 45% German market share and 29% Dutch share of franking machine sales. Francotyp and Postalia were established separately during the 1920s as postage meter companies. They merged in 1991 and went public in 2006.
