Company Description
With Foveon, you could have seen it in color. The company makes photographic light-sensing chips for cameras. Its X3 image sensors are manufactured using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication process, preferred by the semiconductor industry. The X3 name comes from the three layers of pixels embedded in silicon, each recording a primary color -- red on the bottom layer, green in the middle, blue on top. The X3 is used in digital single lens reflex (DSLR) and compact digital camera lines. Co-founded in 1997 by chip engineer Carver Mead, the company was acquired by Japan-based Sigma Corp. in 2008. Foveon was the subject of The Silicon Eye, written by technology news editor George Gilder.
