Company Description

Fortis saw its fortress walls falling down, but hopes to rebuild itself with reinforcements from new parent BNP Paribas. The top bank in Belgium was nationalized in 2008 to prevent its collapse when share values plummeted. The following year, BNP acquired a majority stake and rebranded the company BNP Paribas Fortis. Fortis offers retail and private banking, merchant banking, investment banking, and investment services. (Asset management arm Fortis Investments became part of BNP Paribas Investment Partners). In its home country, Fortis operates more than 1,000 branches and 3,000 ATMs. It also has branches in France, Germany, Poland, and a handful of locations in the US.
