When things are rough up north, why not head south? Ford Motor Company's Brazil operations include three plants and a field testing facility. The main plant in Camaçari uses more than 500 robots to produce 250,000 vehicles per year. Its Taubaté plant makes about 280,000 engines, 500,000 transmissions, and 2.5 million parts and components annually, many of them exported. The Sao Bernardo do Campo plant stamps metal components (doors, hoods, brackets, screws) and paints and assembles finished vehicles using a "just in time" system. It produces about 200,000 cars and trucks annually. Sporting double-digit sales growth annually, Ford Brazil is a standout for its parent at a time when things are tough back home. Company profitability industry depends partly on the difficulty of manufacturing products and partly on demand volume, since many costs are fixed. Small companies can compete successfully by focusing on a small number of products or some highly technical ones. The structure of the industry is complex, with most smaller companies (referred to as "tier 2" and "tier 3" suppliers) selling parts to larger suppliers (referred to as "tier 1" suppliers), who in turn sell component assemblies or modules to car and truck assemblers such as GM and Ford - collectively called OEMs. To read the full description, subscribe now.Top Ford Motor Company Brasil Ltda.
