Flying J puts out a welcome mat for truckers in North America. From its beginnings in 1968 with four locations, the firm has become a leading diesel-fuel distributor and truck-stop operator in the US -- with more than 270 amenity-loaded Flying J Travel Plazas and fuel stops in some 40 US states and six Canadian provinces. Flying J goes beyond the usual truck-stop fare (food, fuel, showers) by offering extra services, including banking, bulk-fuel programs, wireless Internet connections, fuel-cost analysis, and truck-fleet sales. Flying J's travel center business is being acquired out of bankruptcy by Pilot Travel Centers. The firm has put its other businesses, including refineries, up for sale.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Flying J Inc.
Demand is driven by US consumption of gas and diesel fuel. The profitability of refineries depends on efficient operations and the best mixture of products. Although there are significant economies of scale in refinery operations, a small refinery can compete effectively with large ones if it's located in a favorable market area, or if it produces specialty products that are in high demand. The industry is highly automated: average annual revenue per worker is over $7 million. To read the full description, subscribe now.
