The city by the bay is the home to the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, one of 12 regional banks in the Federal Home Loan Bank System chartered by Congress in 1932 to provide credit to residential mortgage lenders. The bank is privately owned by its members, which include some 400 commercial banks, credit unions, and thrift and loan companies, savings and loans, and insurance companies headquartered in Arizona, California, and Nevada. It links members to worldwide capital markets, which provide them with low-cost funding.
