Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines), part of the Federal Home Loan Bank System established by Congress in 1932, provides funding and other support services to member institutions that, in turn, promote housing and economic development in their communities by issuing residential and commercial mortgages, home equity loans, small business loans, and rural and agricultural loans. The bank's members, who are also stockholders and customers, include more than 1,200 financial institutions in its five-state district of Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Membership is primarily comprised of commercial banks (about 85%), but also thrifts, credit unions, and insurance agencies.
