In the eye of any beholder, Fielmann is one of Europe's top opticians. It is #1 in Germany, where it accounts for about half of all glasses sold. Fielmann annually sells about 6.4 million pairs of glasses at some 640 stores in its homeland and in Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland. The firm also sells sunglasses and contact lenses. Fielmann buys in such volume that it sells its eyeglasses at discounts up to 70%. The company's vision isn't short-sighted. In addition to retailing, Fielmann makes its own frames and lenses for sale in its outlets. The company also sells other brands in its stores. The Fielmann family owns about 70% of the company.
