Essent's core market is the Netherlands, although it is also active in Germany and Belgium. In addition to electricity products, Essent also provides waste management services through Essent Waste Management. A handful of Dutch provinces and municipalities own the company. In 2007 the company agreed to merge with fellow Dutch utility giant Nuon , but the deal fell through. In 2009 Essent was acquired by top German energy player, RWE for $10.7 billion.
