The Chicago-based private investment group controls a multi-billion dollar mix of private and public, domestic and foreign businesses, and more. Zell's real estate portfolio makes him one of the US's largest owners of apartments (Equity Residential) and of property leased by manufactured homeowners (Equity LifeStyle Properties). In 2007 Zell acquired media publishing giant Tribune Company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the following year.
