Formerly named Ensign Resource Service Group, the company is one of Canada's top land-based drilling and well-service contractors and a leading drilling contractor in the US Rocky Mountain region. It operates in California and in several foreign oil patches. Ensign has a fleet of more than 300 drilling rigs, including 130 well-servicing rigs and coiled-tubing units. Ensign expanded into oil sands coring and coalbed methane markets by acquiring the drilling assets of Layne Christensen Canada in 2004 and Midnight Sun Drilling in 2005.
