Company Description
Enerkem is ready to move garbage out of the landfill and into the gas tank. The development-stage company plans to produce cellulosic ethanol from municipal solid waste. (Most ethanol produced in the US comes from corn, which still takes time and resources to grow and is subject to commodity prices). Enerkem has a working test plant in Quebec that can produce about five tons of ethanol per day and a commercial demonstration facility nearby that can produce about 50 tons per day, or 1.3 million gallons per year. However, the company is building its first commercial plant in Alberta set to produce 10 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol per year. Enerkem filed a $125 million initial public offering in 2012.
