ETCH has made a permanent mark on the lives of countless children over the years. Knoxville-based East Tennessee Children's Hospital (ETCH), with more than 150 beds, provides a full range of health care services to children from eastern Tennessee and nearby portions of Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia. Among its 90 specialized services are cardiology, neonatal care, orthopedics, and psychiatry. The hospital also offers several outside support services, including those for families of children stricken by cancer. Its emergency department treats some 70,000 patients each year. The hospital's roots are in the foundation of Knox County Crippled Children's Hospital in 1937, with less than 50 beds.
