E.ON U.S. (formerly LG&E Energy) may not be a Kentucky colonel, but it was a major power source in the state. Its former regulated utilities, Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities, distribute electricity to 937,000 customers and natural gas to 326,000 customers in Kentucky and Virginia. The utilities have a combined generating capacity of 7,600 MW, primarily from coal-fired facilities. E.ON U.S.'s nonregulated businesses include international gas distribution and independent power production. E.ON U.S. was a subsidiary of German energy conglomerate E.ON. In 2010 PPL acquired E.ON U.S. and its utilities for $7.6 billion.
