E.ON has transformed itself from a regional conglomerate into a multi-utility and a global player with 30 million customers. Subsidiary E.ON Energie is one of Germany's top two power companies (running neck and neck with RWE), with some 17 million electricity, gas, and water customers; the unit also has about 68,475 MW of electric generating capacity across Germany and Central Europe. E.ON operates E.ON Ruhrgas, Germany's #1 natural gas supplier. Non-German utility subsidiaries include E.ON UK and E.ON Nordic. In response to tightening European regulations regarding carbon emissions, E.ON has announced plans to obtain 24% of its generating capacity from renewable energy sources by 2030.
