Digital Angel was best known for its microchip technology -- marketed through the company's VeriChip (now PositiveID ) subsidiary -- which were computer chips that could be embedded under the skin and read by a remote sensor to check vital signs and diagnose medical problems. As part of a larger effort to divest itself of underperforming units, the company sold its 45% stake in the company to R&R Consulting Partners in late 2008.
