Digital Angel was best known for its VeriChip technology (marketed through the company's VeriChip subsidiary), which were computer chips that could be embedded under the skin and read by a remote sensor to check vital signs and diagnose medical problems. As part of a larger effort to divest itself of underperforming units and subsidiaries, the company sold its 45% stake in VeriChip to R&R Consulting Partners in late 2008.
