To help residents deal with this hot and humid southern region of land and lakes, Department of Electric Utilities of the City of Lakeland, Florida (Lakeland Electric) transmits and distributes power to more than 120,000 homes and businesses. The municipal utility also has interests two main power plants, the 941 MW McIntosh Power Plant and the 176 MW Larsen Power Plant. In case of emergencies Lakeland Electric also operates a group of energy-efficient generating units capable of providing up to 50 MWs of additional electricity to expand capacity during peak use periods or when other units are out of service for maintenance.
