Disney's not the only one with a knockout mouse; in fact, Deltagen has a database full of them. The company provides information about gene functions to biopharmaceutical companies by creating mouse models with specific genes deleted, or knocked out. Deltagen can then study the function and potential relevance of the genes for the development of new drugs. The company stores everything it learns in a database it calls DeltaBase and sells access to that information to companies such as Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, and Merck. The drug companies use the information to select and validate promising targets; they also buy customized knockout mice from Deltagen to test the efficacy of their drug candidates.
