Belgian food retailer Delhaize "Le Lion" has a big cub -- Delhaize America. A holding company for its growing number of US supermarket subsidiaries, Delhaize America runs one of the Southeast's biggest supermarket chains, Food Lion (about 1,320 stores located mainly in the Carolinas and Virginia, but also in eight other eastern seaboard states). It also operates the Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain (about 165 stores in New England and New York), and 70 Harveys supermarkets. In Florida, the firm has converted all of its grocery stores to the Sweetbay format. Parent Delhaize Group formed Delhaize America in 1999.
