Datascope puts its heart into making medical instruments and products -- including intra-aortic balloon pumps and catheters -- for use in heart surgery, coronary angioplasty, and other cardiovascular procedures. Datascope also makes vascular grafts and patches through its InterVascular unit for reconstructive blood vessel surgeries. Products are sold to hospitals and other health care providers in the US and select European countries through direct marketing and in other regions through independent distributors. The company has been paring down its operations; it has exited the patient monitoring and vascular closure markets.
