Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais (COPASA) understands that clean water is essential to life in Brazil. The company provides water supply (for about 12 million people) and sewage treatment services in more than 600 municipalities in the country's state of Minas Gerais. Founded in 1963, COPASA serves customers such as private companies, government agencies, and individuals. The government of Minas Gerais established the company under the name Companhia Mineira de Água e Esgotos in order to enforce the sanitation policy for the state. COPASA receives payment for its services in the form a tariff, which takes into account customers' consumption ranges, as well as inflation.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais
Demand depends on commercial and residential water needs, which are partly related to population growth and partly to the level of economic activity. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficiency of operations, because prices are fixed by public utility commissions (PUCs). Large companies have economies of scale in operations and the ability to raise capital for infrastructure improvements. Small companies can compete successfully through superior engineering or by serving smaller local markets. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per employee at the large companies is $250,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
