Commercial Metals Company (CMC) wants to steel the limelight. CMC's Americas Fabrication and Distribution segment buys and sells primary and secondary metals, fabricated metals, and other industrial metals. The fabrication unit runs a heat treating plant and makes steel fence posts, steel beams, and steel joists. Its Americas Mills segment makes steel products for the construction, energy, petrochemical, and transportation industries, along with copper tubing. CMC's Americas Recycling unit operates 48 secondary metals processing plants that shred, shear, and pulverize scrap metal, which is then sold to steel mills and non-ferrous ingot producers. More than half of the company's sales are in the US. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for Commercial Metals Company
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
